Join MONAH as host Aaron Jones discusses the cultural background, significance, and genealogy of Red Cloud, a Sioux chief, and his descendants with Jay Benham, a descendant himself.


Jay Benham is a member of the Kiowa Tribe. He has a BSE in Art Education from Henderson State University, a MA in Art Education at Northern Arizona University, and has studied American Indian Law at the University Of New Mexico School Of Law. He is currently employed as a Museum Educator at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. He has showcased his art in other states such as Arizona, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. He has permanent collections at the University of Oklahoma at the Fred Jones Jr Museum of Modern Art and at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock at the Sequoyah National Research Center. Benham expresses, “In my art I try to capture a time of tradition of my tribe’s journey from a nomadic tribe to contemporary life. Through my art I attempt to illustrate this transition time from the Old Order to the New Order and how, with success or failure, with grief or with humor, with loss and inheritance this gulf was bridged.”

Aaron W. Jones works as an administrator at Arkansas Arts Academy in Rogers, Arkansas. His professional career has been arts education where he has served as a public school art teacher, university professor of art history and studio art, a museum educator and state arts administrator for the Oklahoma Arts Council. Prior to his position with the Academy Aaron served as the Interpretation.
